Effective December 27, 2015, eligible City of Edmonton permanent employees who are members of Local 30, received an increased credit for the amount of $700.00 into their Health Care Spending Account (HCSA).
The Union receives many questions about how the HCSAs work or what kinds of items can be claimed. We are providing the following link to the City of Edmonton website where you will be re – directed to the Canada Revenue Agency’s website, so you can research to see what items are covered:

Remember you can only claim an item or medical service allowed under the Income Tax Act of Canada as a medical expense. Or you you may use your HCSA for unpaid balances or expenses not covered under your other benefit plans. For example you can claim: vision care expenses, prescription drug expenses, dental, benefit premiums, etc.

Long-Service Recognition for Provisional Employees
December 09, 2015
By Renee Frank
The City of Edmonton values the loyalty and dedication of long-service employees and has long-celebrated the commitment of permanent employees. Now the long-service of provisional employees will also be proudly recognized!
Provisional employees, who have served for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years, will be recognized in the same way as permanent long-service employees. They will receive a framed plaque showcasing pins earned for milestone years, be eligible to select a gift, and receive a letter from their general manager.
“It’s nice to recognize those who have also been instrumental in building and shaping Edmonton and making our city a better place to live, work and play,” says Mike Scott, President of Local 30, who championed this initiative.
“We are taking time to say thank you for your commitment and your many years of service. On behalf of our members, staff and executive, we extend our heartfelt thank you for the work you have done.”
The first step will be focused on current long-service CUPE 30, CSU 52 and staff support provisionals, who reached a milestone on or before August 8, 2015. As with permanent employees, all recognition awards and activities will be coordinated at the department level, so stay tuned for updates from your department.
In 2016 and going forward, milestones for provisional employees will continue to be acknowledged. The plan is also to recognize the years of long service for those employees who have transitioned from provisional to permanent status.
“This is our Working Relationship Agreement in action,” says Jeff MacPherson, Branch Manager, Human Resources. “This initiative rightly recognizes the devotion and contributions of our hard-working and loyal provisional employees. You have, indeed, made a difference in our great City.
Adds Jeff, “A sincere thank you to you all.”
