CUPE Local 30 – Press Release

November 2, 2016

Sisters and Brothers:

It is with a heavy heart that I advise our membership and our CUPE and Labour Union family about the latest workplace fatality at the City of Edmonton.  On Tuesday, Nov 1, one of our 4400 members did not make it home from work.  The tunnel crews in Edmonton are a very tight-knit family and this has had a deep impact on all involved no matter how close or distant they were to the worker.  I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.  An injury to one is an injury to all.  This is the third workplace fatality we have had in two short years.  We will continue fighting for safer workplaces with the hope that no family has to experience another such loss.

In solidarity,

Mike Scott,
President
CUPE Local 30

New Alberta Workers

New Alberta Workers is a province wide program provided by the Alberta Workers’ Health Centre in partnership with the Multicultural Health Brokers Cooperative and the Ethno-Cultural Council of Calgary.

We help new to Alberta workers (immigrants, refugees, and people who come on a temporary work permit – TFWs) to know more about workplace health and safety and to better understand their rights as workers.

We want to learn more about the experience of new to Alberta workers in our workplaces.

The information you provide in our survey will be used to create recommendations for the final report for the New Alberta Workers project. The New Alberta Workers partners will share the recommendations with community members, community organizations, and funders.  We will use the information as part of our work to inform and engage employers, government, and worker representatives in collaborative efforts to ensure the health, safety and fair treatment of ALL Alberta workers.

Your information will be kept strictly confidential and will be used only for the purpose of this research project.
